The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has responded to the recent disclaimer issued by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over reports linking the organisation to the proposed collection of NANS capitation dues from Nigerian students.
In a press release dated 12 August 2026, NANS President, Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, GCNS, said the organisation was seeking to correct what it described as misinformation surrounding its position on the collection of capitation dues.
NANS Partnership With NYSC
NANS clarified that it has not entered into any agreement, partnership or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NYSC for the collection of capitation dues from students.
The students' body said the impression that such an arrangement existed arose after a Facebook discussion was published by Punch NG, which NANS described as an informal discussion that was subsequently interpreted as an official partnership.
According to the organisation, it has never approached the NYSC over an agreement or collaboration for collecting its dues.
NANS Explains Its Position on Capitation Dues
The association also defended its constitutional basis for collecting capitation dues from students.
NANS stated that students already pay Student Union dues on their respective campuses, while the national organisation has broader responsibilities as the apex body representing Nigerian students.
It maintained that its constitution provides for the collection of capitation dues to support its operations and responsibilities.
The organisation stressed that its position was not motivated by an intention to place an unnecessary financial burden on students.
Future Partnership Arrangements
NANS further explained that, as an organisation, it has the ability to propose partnerships to government agencies and other institutions.
However, such proposals remain subject to the decision of the relevant agencies or institutions to accept or reject them.
The association said it would make any future partnership arrangement for the collection of its capitation dues public when the appropriate structures and measures have been put in place by the NANS National Headquarters.
No agency has been named by NANS at this stage as a confirmed partner for the proposed collection.
Students Told to Ignore NYSC Partnership Claims
The students' association urged Nigerian students, members of the public and other stakeholders to disregard claims that NANS has already reached an agreement with NYSC concerning the collection of capitation dues.
NANS said the clarification was necessary to prevent students and the wider public from being misled by inaccurate reports or interpretations of the earlier discussion.
The organisation also emphasised that the NYSC should not be presented as a confirmed collection partner based on the information currently available.
NANS Responds to Earlier NYSC Disclaimer
The clarification follows an earlier statement from the NYSC in which the Scheme dissociated itself from reports suggesting that it had agreed with NANS on the collection of a levy connected to NYSC mobilisation.
NANS' latest statement similarly confirms that there is currently no partnership between both organisations for the collection of capitation dues.
However, NANS maintained that it may pursue partnerships with government agencies or institutions in the future, subject to the willingness of those bodies to participate.
NANS Promises Further Information
The organisation said further details would be provided when the necessary arrangements have been completed at its national headquarters.
Until such an announcement is made, NANS urged students and members of the public not to rely on claims suggesting that an existing NYSC-NANS arrangement for capitation collection is already in place.
The association reaffirmed its stated commitment to transparency, representation and the protection of students' interests.
