OLUSEGUN AGAGU UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (OAUSTECH) ASUU COMMENCES INDEFINITE STRIKE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) Branch, Ondo State, has announced the commencement of industrial action over what it described as the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement.

The notice, dated August 11, 2026, was addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of OAUSTECH and signed by the branch Chairman, Comrade Ogunbamike O.K., and Secretary, Comrade Olojuba M.R.

According to the union, the industrial action is scheduled to begin at 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

Why OAUSTECH ASUU Is Going on Strike

In the notice, the OAUSTECH branch of ASUU stated that it had previously exercised restraint and used available internal mechanisms to pursue dialogue and resolve the issues surrounding the implementation of the agreement.

The union, however, said that the continued delay in implementing the agreed provisions had left it with no reasonable alternative but to commence industrial action.

ASUU maintained that the implementation of collectively negotiated and approved agreements is important for maintaining industrial harmony within the university system.

According to the branch, failure to honour such commitments could weaken trust between university staff and management and create further tension within the institution.

Strike Begins August 12, 2026

The OAUSTECH ASUU branch formally notified the university management that its industrial action would take effect from:

Date: Wednesday, August 12, 2026
Time: 12:00 a.m.

The notice states that the action will continue until both the financial and non-financial components of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement are fully honoured and implemented.

This means the branch has not stated a fixed end date for the industrial action in the notice. Instead, the duration is tied to the implementation of the outstanding financial and non-financial aspects of the agreement.

ASUU Says It Is Open to Suspending the Strike

Despite announcing the industrial action, the OAUSTECH ASUU branch indicated that it remains willing to engage constructively with the university management.

The union stated that it could suspend or review the industrial action once all the financial and non-financial components of the agreement have been implemented.

This leaves room for further engagement between the union and the relevant authorities over the issues that led to the strike.

What the Strike Means for OAUSTECH Students

The announcement may affect academic activities at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, depending on how the industrial action is implemented across the university.

Students are therefore advised to pay attention to official communications from the university and relevant authorities regarding lectures, examinations, academic schedules and other activities.

Students should avoid relying solely on unverified information circulating on social media, particularly concerning the duration of the strike or any possible suspension.

Background to the Union's Position

The notice indicates that the OAUSTECH ASUU branch had attempted to resolve the issues through internal dialogue before resorting to industrial action.

The union said its decision followed what it considered a prolonged delay in implementing the 2025 agreement.

ASUU further stated that negotiated agreements between university staff and the relevant authorities are essential to maintaining industrial harmony and confidence within the university system.

The branch therefore wants the outstanding obligations under the agreement to be addressed before the industrial action can be brought to an end.
