The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has advised members of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream Two to develop responsible financial habits, avoid unnecessary spending and acquire additional skills that can improve their economic prospects.
General Nafiu gave the advice while addressing Corps Members at the Abia and Imo State Orientation Camps, where he encouraged them to approach their service year with financial discipline and a strong focus on personal development.
NYSC DG Advises Corps Members Against Impulse Buying
The NYSC Director-General urged Corps Members to be more careful with their finances and avoid purchasing items impulsively.
He encouraged them to moderate their expectations, reduce unnecessary expenses and develop a consistent savings culture.
According to the advice, financial literacy should be an important part of the Corps Members' personal development during their service year. Learning how to manage available resources responsibly can help them prepare for life after NYSC.
Corps Members Encouraged to Acquire New Skills
General Nafiu also called on the Corps Members to take advantage of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
He encouraged them to learn practical skills that can complement their academic qualifications rather than relying solely on their certificates.
The NYSC DG further urged Corps Members to consider entrepreneurship as a pathway to financial independence. He noted that developing businesses can also enable young people to create employment opportunities for others.

Beyond financial management and skills acquisition, the Director-General encouraged Corps Members to establish meaningful relationships with one another.

NYSC DG Warns Against Unauthorised Journeys
General Nafiu also cautioned Corps Members against travelling without proper authorisation.
He advised them to obtain permission from the NYSC whenever travelling becomes necessary and specifically warned them to avoid night journeys.
The advice forms part of the broader guidance given to Corps Members concerning responsible conduct and personal safety during their service year.
1,731 Corps Members Registered in Abia Camp
During the Director-General's visit to the Abia State Orientation Camp, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Yunusa Tanimu, presented a report on the situation at the camp.
According to the report, 1,731 Corps Members had been registered at the Abia State Orientation Camp.
The figure comprises:
- 750 male Corps Members
- 981 female Corps Members
The State Coordinator reported that the Corps Members had remained disciplined and successfully adapted to the regimented camp environment since their arrival.
He also stated that camp activities had been proceeding smoothly, with the active participation of Corps Members and NYSC officials.
Abia Government Commended for Support
Mr Tanimu also acknowledged the support provided by the Abia State Government to the NYSC in the state.
The commendation came as the orientation programme continued with the participation of Corps Members and officials.
