The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has announced an immediate ban on all forms of "signing-out" celebrations and related activities by final-year students across its campuses.
The directive, which takes effect immediately, prohibits every form of organized celebration associated with the completion of final examinations within the university environment. The decision forms part of the institution's efforts to maintain order, ensure campus security, and protect lives and property.
Management Explains Reason for the Ban
According to the university, the decision follows repeated incidents linked to signing-out celebrations, including disorderly conduct, violence, destruction of property, and disruptions to academic and administrative activities.
The management noted that these recurring incidents have become a growing concern and are incompatible with the peaceful academic atmosphere the university seeks to maintain.
Security Concerns Prompt Immediate Action
The university also expressed concern over the increasing presence of unauthorized individuals who gain access to the campus during signing-out celebrations.
Management explained that the involvement of outsiders poses significant security risks to students, staff, and university property. Preventing such threats, the institution stated, is one of the key reasons for enforcing the immediate prohibition of these activities.
University Cites Responsibility to Maintain Order
UNIZIK emphasized that it has a statutory responsibility to preserve peace, protect members of the university community, and safeguard institutional property.
In line with this responsibility, the management described signing-out celebrations within the university premises as unacceptable and inconsistent with the institution's rules and regulations.
Sanctions for Violating the Directive
The university warned that any student found participating in or organizing prohibited signing-out activities will face disciplinary action.
The sanctions include:
Rustication.
Withdrawal from the university.
The institution added that these penalties will be applied in accordance with the provisions of the Students' Handbook.
Management further stated that external individuals who participate in the banned activities may be arrested and prosecuted in line with applicable laws and regulations.
University Calls for Full Compliance
To ensure effective implementation of the directive, the university has directed all relevant stakeholders to enforce the ban.
Those expected to oversee compliance include:
Deans of Faculties.
Heads of Departments.
Academic Advisers.
The Students' Union Government (SUG).
Other relevant university stakeholders.
The institution urged all members of the university community to cooperate fully with the directive in the interest of safety, discipline, and the smooth running of academic activities.
