GOVERNOR SANWO-OLU APPOINTS PROFESSOR AYODEJI BADEJO AS 10TH SUBSTANTIVE LASU VICE-CHANCELLOR



Lagos State Governor and Visitor to Lagos State University (LASU), Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appointed Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo as the university’s 10th Substantive Vice-Chancellor.

The appointment was announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, in a statement issued by Mr Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy.

Professor Badejo, a Professor of Counselling Psychology and experienced university administrator, will take over the leadership of the institution following the completion of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM.

Professor Badejo to Become LASU Vice-Chancellor on September 20

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor is scheduled to assume office on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

His appointment will be for a single five-year term, according to the announcement.

He will succeed Professor Olatunji-Bello, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor is expected to end on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

The transition will therefore see Professor Badejo take over the administration of the university immediately after the expiration of the current Vice-Chancellor's tenure.

Appointment Made in Line With LASU Law

The Lagos State Government stated that the appointment was made in accordance with the provisions of the Lagos State University Law 2004 (As Amended), Ch. L69, Vol. 7, Schedule 1, Section 3, which provides for the appointment of the institution's Vice-Chancellor.

The appointment consequently marks the beginning of a new five-year leadership period for the university under Professor Badejo.

Who Is Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo?

Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo is a Professor of Counselling Psychology and has been described in the announcement as a distinguished academic and university administrator.

His background in academia and university administration is expected to form part of his experience as he assumes responsibility for leading Lagos State University.

As the 10th substantive Vice-Chancellor, he will oversee the institution's academic and administrative affairs during his five-year tenure.

Professor Olatunji-Bello's Tenure Ends September 19

The appointment comes as the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, approaches its conclusion.

Professor Olatunji-Bello's tenure will officially end on Saturday, September 19, 2026, paving the way for the incoming Vice-Chancellor to commence his term the following day.

Professor Badejo's assumption of office on September 20 will therefore mark a formal leadership transition at LASU.
