Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, has approved the expulsion of six students over examination misconduct and the withdrawal of nine others for poor academic performance and failure to comply with registration requirements. The decisions were reached by the University Senate during its 167th Regular Meeting held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
According to the university, the six expelled students were involved in an examination misconduct case relating to the rewriting of an examination at the private residence of a lecturer. The Senate also referred the lecturer involved to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for appropriate action.
The latest decisions form part of the university's efforts to maintain academic discipline, examination integrity and compliance with its rules and regulations.
Six PAAU Students Expelled Over Examination Misconduct
The examination misconduct case originated from an incident investigated by the university following information received on July 1, 2026.
The university stated that its security operatives acted on information concerning the alleged coordination of students to rewrite an examination at the private residence of a lecturer. The lecturer, Dr. Maji Okpanachi of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, and some students were subsequently arrested at the residence, where some exhibits were also recovered.
The residence was located behind the Police Area Command Office along Idah Road, Anyigba.
Following the incident, the security report was forwarded to the University's Examination Misconduct Committee for further investigation and consideration.
At the Senate meeting on August 26, the committee's report was considered. According to the university, the investigation corroborated the earlier security report through statements attributed to the lecturer and students involved, alongside other available records.
The investigation established, according to the university's account, that some students rewrote BOT102 (Introduction to Plant Science) at the lecturer's residence several days after the original examination had been conducted.
The university further stated that the affected students paid N10,000 each to rewrite the course examination.
Based on the committee's findings, Senate approved the expulsion of six 100-Level students from the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology.

The university described the offence as gross examination misconduct.
Lecturer Referred for Disciplinary Action
In addition to the decisions concerning the students, the Senate approved the referral of Dr. Maji Okpanachi to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee.
The committee is expected to consider the matter and recommend appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the university's established rules and regulations.
This means that the lecturer's case is being handled separately through the university's staff disciplinary process.
Nine Students Withdrawn From the University
PAAU Senate also approved the withdrawal of nine students for reasons unrelated to the examination misconduct case.
The university said six of the students were withdrawn for failing to register for two consecutive semesters, while three others were withdrawn because of poor academic performance.

The three students withdrawn on the grounds of poor academic performance are:

- UMOLO JOHN PHILIP – 24MC1192, Communication and Media Studies
The university's announcement did not provide further details about the specific academic performance criteria that led to the withdrawal of these three students.
One Examination Misconduct Case Referred for Further Investigation
Senate also considered the case involving JUDE OJOAJOGWU ITODO, with matriculation number 26PL1068.
Rather than reaching a final decision on the case at the meeting, Senate directed that it be returned to the Examination Misconduct Committee for further investigation.
This indicates that the university's investigation into that particular case remains ongoing, based on the information contained in the announcement.
PAAU Reaffirms Commitment to Academic Integrity
Reacting to the decisions, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Salisu Ogbo Usman, reaffirmed the university's position on academic discipline and integrity.
He stated that the institution would not accept conduct capable of undermining the credibility of its academic and examination processes.
The Vice-Chancellor also commended the committees involved in investigating the cases, describing their work as thorough and detailed. According to him, the decisions demonstrate the university's determination to promote accountability and protect the integrity of its academic system.
He further urged students to remain committed to their studies, maintain good character and comply with the institution's academic and examination regulations.
A Reminder to PAAU Students
The decisions highlight the importance of complying with university regulations, particularly those governing examinations, registration and academic progression.
Students are expected to follow approved examination procedures and ensure that they meet the university's registration requirements. The university has also emphasised the need for members of its academic community to uphold ethical conduct.
The affected students have been instructed to return all university property in their possession, including identity cards and other official items, to the appropriate authorities before leaving the institution.
