Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has issued a public warning over a fraudulent Facebook account allegedly impersonating the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, fsi.
The university said the fake account is being used to present its operators as the Vice-Chancellor and direct unsuspecting individuals to communicate privately through WhatsApp. The warning covers students, staff, members of the public and other stakeholders who may come across the account or related contacts.
Fake Facebook Account Impersonates BUK Vice-Chancellor
According to a public disclaimer published in the university’s Special Bulletin, Vol. XLIV No. 79, dated Thursday, September 24, 2026, an unauthorised Facebook account has been identified as falsely representing the person and office of Professor Haruna Musa.
The operators of the account allegedly encourage people to move conversations to WhatsApp through the phone number 09128675732, alongside other numbers.
BUK clarified that the Vice-Chancellor did not create, approve or authorise the Facebook account or the associated WhatsApp communication.
University Warns Against Unauthorised Offers
The institution further stated that no individual or group has been authorised to use personal social media accounts or private WhatsApp lines to conduct official university business.
This includes attempts to solicit money, offer employment or facilitate admission through such unofficial channels.
Students, prospective applicants and other members of the public should therefore treat any such communication as unauthorised unless it comes through the university's recognised channels.
BUK Reports Matter to Law Enforcement Agencies
The university said it has formally reported the impersonation case to the relevant law enforcement agencies.
According to the disclaimer, the matter has been referred for immediate investigation and prosecution of those involved.
The university did not identify the persons operating the account or provide further details about the law enforcement agencies handling the case.
Public Warned Against Contacting the Fraudulent Account
BUK urged members of the public to avoid communicating, transacting or otherwise engaging with the operators of the Facebook account and the WhatsApp number mentioned in the notice.
The institution also stated that it would not be responsible for financial losses or other damages resulting from dealings with the individuals behind the fraudulent platforms.
Anyone who receives a message from someone claiming to represent the Vice-Chancellor through an unofficial Facebook account or private WhatsApp contact should therefore exercise caution.
How to Verify Information From BUK
For genuine information and official enquiries, the university directed members of the public to use its official website and recognised communication channels.
This is particularly relevant to students and prospective applicants who may receive messages involving admission, employment or requests for payment.
The disclaimer does not provide a separate official WhatsApp number or Facebook account for the Vice-Chancellor. It instead directs the public to use the university's official channels when seeking authentic information.
